Costa Ballena

There are hidden treasures throughout the Southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica known as Costa Ballena – or Coast of the Whale — named for the whales that visit this area each year.
We invite you to embark on your own exploration of a true paradise waiting to be discovered.
Among the many jewels of “Costa Ballena”, one can find a variety of landscapes, microclimates, hidden paths, brightly colored flora and pristine beaches bathed in sunlight and sea.  Our forest sanctuaries are home to many plants and animals only indigenous to this part of the world.  Foot trails lead through primary and secondary rainforests where there are birds of many colors singing beautifully, and where one can find many different species of mammals and insects.
Virgin beaches, beautiful mangroves teaming with life, towering forests, rapidly flowing rivers, cascading waterfalls, mysterious sea caves, sun drenched islands and palm and almond tree lined coasts offer many choices for relaxation and adventure. Experience several educational national parks and biological reserves in this area as well.
Begin with a refreshing ocean swim in Dominical, the front door to “Costa Ballena”.  Ride the huge waves or soak in a natural tidal pool. Continue down the coast through Dominicalito and Playa Hermosa where you will find miles of both rocky and sandy beautiful beaches. View migrating whales and dolphins, and sometimes sea turtles, that take refuge in Ballena Marine National Park just past Uvita, where during low tide you can walk out to the point that forms a natural whale’s tail on the ocean floor.  Experience water sports such as surfing, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, rafting, or sports fishing. The mangrove channels on the Terraba and Sierpe Rivers offer calmer waters where one can kayak and observe birds, several species of monkeys, reptiles, such as the crocodile, and many plants found in this ecosystem.  Go to Ojochal, close to the Tortuga beach, hidden in the nature, where you can explore areas on horse back or ATV and find beautiful waterfalls. Or try one of the excellent restaurants in Ojochal.
